iPad (1st generation), 32GB, iOS 5.1.1, Wi-Fi Only
I recently purchased a 1st Generation iPad with the max iOS 5.1 and I need GarageBand on it. I have GB on my iMac but it doesn't show up in the Apps selection of iTunes so I'm stuck on how to request an older version of GarageBand.

Since the iOS and Mac versions of GarageBand are different, you'll need to purchase it in the Store section of iTunes. You can just search the store for GarageBand if you're having trouble finding it.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply...however, I think I need to reiterate, I need an 'older version' of GarageBand as I only have iOS 5.1.1 on my iPad. I need GarageBand 1.4....which isn't offered on in the Apple/iTunes store. Any idea who might have an old working link to older GBs?

I understand, but if you download the latest version of GarageBand in iTunes, you'll then be offered an older version if you try to download it from the App Store on your iPad. The App Store has a feature to let you download older versions of apps, but one of the prerequisites is that you already own the app, hence the need to download the latest version in iTunes.

Aug 20, 2017  It might work to download it the app from the “Purchased” tab. Locate the app (there is a search box for searching for purchased apps), and attempt to download it. If there it is an older version, it will ask if you want to download it.

iPad 2, iOS 9.3.5, Garageband compatibility
Vemund, Oct 20, 2016 1:09PM

Maybe I should have asked Apple directly, but I was very interested in hearing what advice you might have. I'm a Norwegian music teacher just starting at a new school where they have been lucky to get hold of ten iPad 2's. I immediately thought to myself: YES, thinking of the possibilities one could use the iPads in the music subject, more precisely using Garageband. But that dream soon dwindled, as I found out the iOS updates for these iPads ended at 9.3.5, and when trying to download Garageband from App Store, it would not install unless iOS 10 was installed. This was such a letdown.
So I was wondering, is there any way, any way at all, where one could install an older version of Garageband on these iPads, without having bought any previous versions of GB?

That is a good question. As a matter of fact, there is a way to install an older version. It involves downloading GarageBand in iTunes on your computer first so it will be associated with your Apple ID account, and then going to the App Store on your iPad and downloading GarageBand should yield the option to download an older version. Full details on this procedure are available in our article here: App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps.

Garageband not compatible with this ipad
  • Jun 16, 2017  GarageBand for Mac now syncs your projects with iOS. IPad-compatible version of the project and send it to the iPad via iCloud. This special project will show up automatically in your iPad.
  • GarageBand for iPad is different: projects you create in this app can be loaded into the Mac version of the software, so it stands to reason that they'll also be compatible with Logic (Logic can open Mac GarageBand files, after all). This being the case, it'll almost certainly be a genuinely useful musical scratchpad, and might even help to.
